Naturally Beautiful

Nature is full of colour, sometimes in unexpected places.

Take the eggs laid by our flock of hens for example. While brown and white eggs are commonplace, did you know that certain breeds of chickens lay blue, green, olive, or even very dark copper eggs? We have a flock of assorted breeds: common brown commercial hens, Ameraucana, bielefelders, some Easter egg crosses, and more. And it shows in our egg basket! It’s such a joy collecting green, blue, speckled brown, white, olive green, and even some pink shaded eggs from the coop. And I know that you love opening your egg cartons to admire the pretty hues as well 😍 They say we eat with our eyes first, and I’d concur that beautiful eggs make delicious food.

But it’s not just the shell colours that make our eggs special. Our flock (like our herd of cows) is certified organic. This means that every year we are inspected to make sure we are strictly following the Canadian Organic Standards. It guarantees that the grains we feed our hens are certified organic, not grown with chemical fertilizers or conventional herbicides and pesticides. It means that our flock of pretty feathered friends get to spend their days out in our lush pasture except in the most inclement weather. There they can peck and scratch to their hearts’ content, nibble on fresh grass, chase bugs, and just do relaxing chicken-y things, before heading back to the coop for protection and their roosts and eggs boxes at sunset. If you’ve met our friendly chickens on our summer farm tours, I’m sure you’ll agree that they are most certainly happy hens! And if you’ve tasted their eggs, you know the flavour can’t be beat.

This past summer and fall was an anxious time, however. The avian flu presence here in the Fraser Valley had us nervously watching our flock for signs of illness and caused us to limit customer interactions with our flock. So far our hens have remained healthy and we hope that by springtime we will be able to introduce them on our farm tours again ❤️

What do you think? Will these beautiful rainbow eggs be gracing your table in the near future? Be sure to snag a dozen or two next time you visit the cheese shop!
